A breast lift (or mastopexy) is performed to correct the sagging breast. A “deflated” or droopy/saggy breast is referred to as a ptotic breast. Breast ptosis is often caused by multiple factors, including pregnancies/breast feeding, massive weight loss, and aging (which decreases skin quality and the ability to hold up the breast in a more youthful position). A breast lift is performed by making incisions around the nipple areolar complex, usually with a vertical component extending down to, and often including the underlying breast fold. During your consultation, you will discuss the various types of breast lifts and which method will address the breast ptosis with the highest likelihood of success. A breast lift is often combined with breast augmentation, depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals.

A breast reduction serves to create a youthful, smaller and more lifted breast. Macromastia (large breasts) can be a result of various factors, including hormonal influences. Symptoms of larger breasts, other than aesthetic factors, include neck and back pain, poor posture, and difficulty fitting into clothing. A breast reduction can help correct these symptoms in addition to creating a more aesthetic-appearing breast. Incisions are made around the areola, often with a vertical component, and a transverse component along the inframammary fold (the fold underlying the breast). The amount of breast tissue to be removed and lift depends on the patient’s desires and anatomy.

Breast reconstruction may be performed in a number of ways, including using implants, autologous tissue or a combination of the two. Method of reconstruction depends on the extent of any tumour, use of radiation, chemotherapy, patient anatomy and patient wishes.
